The Present: Department Name Change? Undergraduate Program | Graduate Program | Faculty & Research | Dept. Name Change?
The life sciences and biotechnology are having a major impact on society in general, and the chemical engineering profession, in particular. This is especially true in California due to the economic importance of biotechnology, pharmaceutical companies, agriculture, and food processing.
We have responded to this challenge by recruiting outstanding faculty who have been trained as chemical engineers, but have major research programs in important areas of biotechnology. (See the Research section and the photos shown here.)
We also have added required biochemistry and cell biology courses to our undergraduate curriculum, in addition to elective courses in biochemical engineering, bioengineering, and systems biology.
Some of the other top chemical engineering programs have recently changed their department name by adding a second designation such as “Biomolecular Engineering”, “Biological Engineering”, or “Biochemical Engineering”. However, we have decided to not change our name. We believe that the term, “chemical engineering”, is broad enough to include new research fields such as biotechnology and nanotechnology.
