The Arts Building - Our first location

For an early history of the Department (1965-1980), see Dale Seborg’s article in Chemical Engineering Education.

A summary of the Department’s more recent history (post-1980) was included in the 2007 edition of the Department Newsletter. Be sure to register for the Newsletter by completing a brief questionnaire.

The Engineering II Building -
Our current location

Up to 1980, the UCSB College of Engineering was quite small, consisting of only three academic departments. Although there are currently only five departments, the College was recently rated the number one Engineering Program in the U.S. by the Princeton Review.
