October 17, 2008 -- Mike Doherty succeeded Gary Leal as department chair, effective July 1, 2008. Gary Leal has served as our department chair longer than anyone else. He joined the department in 1989 and served as chair from 1989 until 1998. Dean Mathew Tirrell persuaded Gary to serve a second term as chair from 2004 to 2008. During his two terms as chair, the department has greatly prospered and joined the ranks of leading U.S. ChE departments.
Susannah Scott succeeded Brad Chmelka as vice chair for the graduate program, effective July 1, 2008. She joined the department in 2002 and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Chemistry. During the four years that Brad Chmelka was in charge of the graduate program, graduate student recruitment was very successful and major reforms were made in both the curriculum and the qualifying exam procedures.
The faculty are very grateful and appreciative to Professors Leal and Chmelka for their outstanding service to the department. We are also very pleased that Professors Doherty and Scott have agreed to succeed them.
Dale Seborg continues as the vice chair for the undergraduate program.
Frank Doyle has assumed a new position as Associate Dean of Engineering for Research. He continues as the Associate Director of the Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies, which administers a large, collaborative research program involving over 60 faculty at UCSB, Caltech and MIT (http://www.icb.ucsb.edu).
