New catalysts and optical materials are being developed by Professors Chmelka, McFarland, and Scott.

The research philosophy in the Chemical Engineering Department, like that of most other Departments at UCSB, recognizes the need for multidisciplinary collaborations between its faculty members and those in other Departments. Engineering Science has become very complex, usually calling for team work and expertise in different areas for a project to be successful.

Many professors have joint appointments, write joint grant proposals, and share students, post-docs, visitors, and facilities. Many graduate courses are cross-listed, both across Departments and between graduate and undergraduate students.

Diabetes control strategies are being developed by Professors Doyle and Seborg

We believe that our collaborative spirit is one of the reasons for our rapidly increasing recognition as one of the top Chemical Engineering Departments in the country: seven of our senior faculty are NAE members, one is a NAS member, six are fellows of the American Physical Society, and in recent years one or more of our faculty has received the AICHE alpha Chi Sigma Award (for Chemical Engineering research), the Colburn and other awards of the AICHE, the American Physical Society’s Fluid dynamics, High Polymer Physics Prize and the Dillon Medal, the MRS Medal (for materials research); and our junior faculty have received Young Investigator, NSF Career and PECASE awards.
