Pfizer forms research consortium w/ 4 universities, Entelos to look at diabetes

NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Pfizer Inc. Friday said it's formed a research consortium with four universities and private physiological modeling company Entelos to look at diabetes and obesity pathobiology.

The Dow component said the group would 're-examine the regulatory mechanisms of human energy metabolism.' In connection with the consortium, Pfizer said it's funding a three-year, $14 million insulin resistance pathway project to examine at 'insulin signaling in adipose cells to increase understanding of diabetes and obesity.'

The universities involved are University of California, Santa Barbara; Caltech; the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and University of Massachusetts.

Pfizer shares were up 2% to $20.43 in late trades. Michael Baron mb
