Shimadzu GC-2010 Gas Chromatograph (GC-FID)

The Shumadzu gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector (coupled with its software GC Solutions) is typically used for sampling the gas phase above a grafting reaction, or to monitor the conversion of substrates over a catalytic surface. Accessories include multiple columns for optimal elution of light molecules (ie. CH4 to C5H12) v.s. heavier products.

Shimadzu GC-2010 Gas Chromatograph with - QP2010 Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS)

The Shumadzu GC-MS is identical to the GC listed above except products are analyzed via the Mass Spectrometer.  This allows different products to be identified based on their molecular weight and fragmentation patterns.  For each of the instruments, there are various capillary columns available for the separation of volatile liquids and gases.

ThIS GC is used to monitor the catalysis products from flow experiments. The TCD detector was necessary to monitor hydrogen formation with out the use of a mass spec. For this reason argon gas is used as a carrier.
