ABSTRACT

The commoditization of engineering thermoplastics over the last 10 years, due to the emergence of a number of new, low cost, and low overhead competitors has resulted in significant pressure of the profitability of our division of GE. This wake-up call has resulted in a renewed investment in R&D and Marketing, and renewed focus on development and commercialization of proprietary new products, generally based on co-polymers. This talk will discuss the engineering thermoplastics industry and environment, outline the business and R&D strategy at GE Plastics, and then summarize the chemistry and engineering hurdles overcome to bring several new materials to commercial reality.
