ABSTRACT

Commercial clinical diagnostics devices must be engineered to provide ease-of-use in terms of sample handling, reliability with respect to the assay result, and simple manufacturability to reduce production costs. A review of the fluidics and biochemistry of several marketed products will be presented in order to highlight the current state-of-the-art. Point-of-care and consumer systems based on optical and electrochemical detection will be described in detail along with the research and development history behind the virtually painless Sof-Tact blood glucose monitoring system.
