Engineered Biological & Bio-Inspired Systems

The O'Malley group works at the interface of cell biology, genetics, and engineering to characterize protein synthesis in cells, to understand how microbes can be reprogrammed for applications in biofuel production and bioengineering.

The Gordon group is also developing bio-inspired approaches to structure material interfaces to eliminate reflection and enhance light extraction to increase the power conversion efficiency of opto-electronic, photovoltaic, and light emitting devices in conjunction with the Solid State Lighting and Energy Electronics Center at UCSB.
